Yo Cuento Teatro

An artistic intervention project in healthcare environments

Yo Cuento Teatro is an artistic healthcare project that was launched in 2021 by pediatric neurologists, artists, and families of pediatric patients at the Hospital Niño Jesús in Madrid. Its objective is to improve the quality of life of children with neurological diseases, as well as that of their families and caregivers.

The project aims to provide patients with theatrical tools to tell their stories in the first person and transform society's perception of illness. With arts educators and the collaboration of other artistic and healthcare professionals, including members of the Compañía Nacional de Danza, a space is created for play, dialogue, and artistic creation where doctors, artists, patients, and families work together to create synergies, change the doctor-patient relationship, and improve hospital stays.

At Yo Cuento Teatro, in addition to the CND, more than 24 performing arts professionals have participated since 2021, expanding the impact of the performing arts beyond the cultural sphere and helping cultural sector professionals to learn about and create new narratives on disability, hospitals, and childhood. In its short existence, the project has already received 8 awards, staged 6 artistic productions created and performed by children with neurological diseases, reaching over 1,000 spectators, and has produced 8 audiovisual works, including the short film “Radiografías” (created with the support of Netflix Spain) and the documentary “This is how Radiografías was made”, both selected for screening at the 28th edition of the Málaga Festival.
